A glimpse into who we are ...

Whether you’ve been tracking us for a while, are new to the Brasstacks brand (welcome!), or we’ve been able to transform a space for you already, we’d love to take a second to introduce ourselves.

We are Kevin and Molly Jarvis, and Brasstacks is our Design + Build endeavor, serving the greater Kansas City area. We exist as a collective to simply love people and give life to beautiful spaces. We love that we are able to streamline the communication between contractor (Kevin) and designer (me!), delivering a consistent vision to our clients from beginning to end. We are a package deal, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

So how did we meet and begin this amazing project/life together? Glad you asked! We met in Chicago, both attending art school in separate majors. I was in Fashion and he was in Graphic Design, and from there we’d gone on to several different careers within the scope of our studies. When we were first married, we lived in Kevin’s hometown of Detroit for several years. We both have super fond memories of spending evenings as newlyweds grabbing coffee and driving around the city, just dreaming of all the houses we could transform or businesses we could open. We’ve both been huge dreamers our entire lives, and this optimism and drive to move forward led us into opening Brasstacks.

By the time we hatched the plan for Brasstacks, we were back in Kansas City for good, I had been running Merchandising and Store Design for a major retailer for very close to a decade, and Kevin had done everything from working for his mom’s church to being a tattoo artist. He originally began Brasstacks as a furniture company, making gorgeous live edge tables and taking on select build outs for local businesses.

We are very much a "family" business, not only do we involve our kids in a lot, we are also employ Kevin's mom and dad!

I may be just slightly biased, but Kevin is the kind of guy who just knows everything. Seriously, he could look at anything and know a.) exactly how it is built and b.) how to fix it if it’s broken. I encouraged him for years that he could be a general contractor, and finally after hearing it from another friend, it finally clicked for him and we took the leap! It’s always scary making the jump into self-employment, but now we can’t imagine our lives any other way.

Now we both are employed full-time for ourselves, and work with the greatest team of folks around! We love our city, and draw inspiration from all that Kansas City has to offer, as well as looking to the small businesses that create the materials we utilize in our designs to breathe fresh life into spaces. I also feel that so many good designs come out of Australia, so I’m always keeping tabs on what is fresh in the land down under to incorporate into our Midwestern homes. I tend to avoid looking too deep into ‘home trends’ though, as it quickly becomes more about what will look good on your Instagram feed instead of timeless and quality design that will age well. With that in mind, I am more into textures than colors (maybe that will be a blog post ;)) and I love incorporating natural materials into the home.

This is our home, our office, our storage facility and many other things the a small family business dictates :)

If you ask us what our dreams for Brasstacks are currently, we’d have to tell you to ask us at least once a day, because the answer is constantly evolving. Some days I think I would like to get back to my roots and open a retail concept, other times we imagine ourselves flipping houses or building custom homes, we even toy with the idea of building a modern A-frame in the woods and submit to slow living. However, no matter what idea comes to us, we know we have found our calling in Design + Build and will always be creating something incredible.
